Dear Catholic School Community, Bishop Gruss recently shared a document with pastors and directors of parish life associated with schools and the Office of Catholic Schools team. A few things struck me as we prepared for and began the 2024-25 academic year. “Education is the process of shaping us to fulfill the purpose of our lives; to know the happiness that comes from living in accord with our dignity and our nature,” writes Bishop James Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska, in The Joy and Wonder of Catholic Education, a pastoral letter about developing authentically Catholic schools. “Education is the work of drawing out, developing, and learning to use our intellects, our memories, our wills, and our imaginations, to the fullness of their potential. Since education is the formation of human hearts, minds, and wills for the glory of their Creator, it has always been a priority within Catholicism.” As we begin the 2024-25 school year, I am pleased to share this Community Update, featuring just a few of the exciting improvements and activities in our schools. From beginning the academic year with Eucharistic processions to multidisciplinary learning opportunities, Catholic school families in the Diocese of Saginaw can experience the lasting impact of Catholic education. Building leaders are engaging in diocesan-wide improvement efforts and the Catholic School Council is continuing its mission of advising and guiding diocesan leadership. Together, in partnership with our school families, we are working towards the goal of forming hearts, minds and wills for the glory of God.
